“I don’t need a planner. I need ads! I need someone to do an ad when I say ‘Do an ad’ and keep doing it until I (and my mother - she’s nearly target audience) like it! What more is there to advertising? What happened? Did I miss something? When did all this shit happen?”

Right now, news organizations should be trying to reach more people and engage with them more deeply. They should seek hyperdistribution.

Since when did it become OK for media people to shrink their audiences? Since they gave up on the ad model, that’s when. But I am not ready to surrender to the idea that advertising, which has supported mass media since its creation, is over. Yes, ad rates are lower; welcome to competition. That’s all the more reason why publishers must attract larger audiences publics – make it up on volume – as well as more targeted and valuable communities.

It’s effectively asking the readers to do something (scan the code)before they can find out what it is Siemens want to tell them. That’s like the url that leads to a webpage with an “Enter here” button. That’s like the customer service number that leads to a labyrinthine telephone menu. That’s like the headline offer that forgets to tell you about the small print. It’s all bad marketing.

If you’ve somehow earned the customer’s scarce attention, then at least have the sense to tell them something. Directly.
